As the Copenhagen summit draws to a close, there has been no deal on reducing emissions. No deal on which to base mankind’s future on this planet.
Some states (USA, Brazil, South Africa, India and China) have agreed to limit global temperature increases to 2C, but have not agreed on how to implement this. It has been referred to as a ‘first step’. If this is true, then what was Kyoto? That was 12 years ago, and we’ve only just reached the first step?
Give me strength!
Okay, so we have Obama’s America that is still in the pocket of the oil lobby; whilst China is building a new power station every hour. The two superpowers of global politics; the two biggest causes of emissions – both paying lip service to the biggest threat we face.
Fixing the damage is going to be hard as it is – we need to start NOW!
I feel sorry for the people of small island nations, like Mauritius, for they will be the first to go – whilst we stood by and watched.
It’s hard to believe that mankind is anything other than doomed. We have destroyed this planet. We have received the warnings. We have ignored them.
At some point we will have to face the consequences of our (in)actions.
In the meantime, I don’t have much hope. I’m off to build an ark…
